  • He was angry because the victim recently gifted land to his younger sibling
  • Police have filed a report against the man, and a murder case has been registered

A man in the Indian state of Telangana beheaded his elderly mother this week over a land dispute, according to reports.

The man, identified as a chicken shop owner named K Kannappa, allegedly used a knife to attack and kill his 60-year-old mother K Ramanamma at their home in the village of Marigadi Thursday morning, newspaper the Times of India reported.

Kannappa, 35, got angry after the victim gifted four acres of their farm to his younger sibling, Lavanya, according to the outlet.

The father-of-two regularly quarreled with Ramanamma over the decision, with the latter trying to convince her son that it should not drive a wedge between the siblings and that there were still six acres of land remaining for them.

However, Kannappa was allegedly not satisfied with his mother's reasoning and chose to kill her.

Authorities, who had previously warned Kannappa not to harass Ramanamma, reportedly rushed to the scene of the crime upon learning of the killing.

Police booked a first information report against Kannappa and a murder case was registered, Jangaon police inspector E Srinivas told media.

Kannappa initially tried to evade authorities, according to the official.

He later surrendered to police and has since been placed into their custody, sources said.

Ramanamma's body has been taken to a government hospital for postmortem.

In a similar incident from late 2021, a man in India's Uttar Pradesh state shot his brother and sister-in-law over a land dispute while the two victims were celebrating their daughter's birthday.

The man, identified only as Moolchand, used a pistol to fire four rounds at his brother, Mohit Sharma, and his brother's wife, Pooja, in the village of Khidarpur in Bulandshahr on Nov. 13, 2021, according to police.

The couple's daughter, Harshita Sharma, was cutting her birthday cake when Moolchand, who also went by the alias Moola Kumar, started shooting, unnamed guests at the party claimed.

Mohit and Pooja were critically injured from the shooting and were taken to a hospital, while Moolchand was arrested.

Moolchand and Mohit argued over the distribution of paternal land before the party and during the event, police said.
