S&P 500 Pullback Puts Bulls on Alert About Whether The 8,000 Level Is Still Within Reach
The benchmark index stands below 7,700 on Wednesday.

The S&P 500's retreat from record territory is putting a critical technical support zone in focus, with Wall Street watching whether buyers can defend the market's recent gains or whether a deeper pullback could be ahead.
The benchmark index edged higher Tuesday to close at 7,677.28. That leaves the S&P 500 just 1.6% below its August 13 record close of 7,798.99 and about 1.8% below the intraday record of 7,816.70 reached the same day. It continued to edge down on Wednesday.
While the decline from those peaks has been relatively modest, technical analysts are closely watching what happens next. The S&P 500 is approaching an important support area between roughly 7,550 and 7,620, a range where several closely followed technical indicators converge.
That cluster could determine whether the latest weakness proves to be a temporary pause before another attempt at record highs or develops into a more significant correction. The support zone includes the market's June 2 high, as well as peaks reached in mid-June and mid-July. It also contains the rising 50-day moving average, one of the most widely watched indicators for assessing the intermediate trend of an index or stock.
Adding to the significance of the area is the intersection of two weekly Gann lines, with a convergence near 7,560 attracting particular attention. Gann lines, named after trader W.D. Gann, are trendlines used by some technical analysts to identify potential areas of market support and resistance over time.
When several technical signals converge around the same price level, traders can view the area as increasingly important because it may attract additional buying or selling. In the S&P 500's case, the concentration of indicators around 7,550 to 7,620 could encourage investors to buy into further weakness, potentially establishing a floor under the index.
Holding that range would keep the record highs within striking distance. A move above the August 13 intraday peak of 7,816.70 would mark a fresh record and could shift traders' attention toward the psychologically important 8,000 level. Reuters' technical analysis points to an upside target zone between approximately 8,000 and 8,075 if the S&P 500 can decisively break through its previous peak.
Such a move would represent another milestone for an index that remains close to its all-time highs despite its recent pullback. The downside scenario, however, becomes more significant if the 7,550-to-7,620 support zone fails.
The next major technical level would be the rising 100-day moving average near 7,400. A break below that area could bring the S&P 500 toward its July lows, which sit between approximately 7,313 and 7,237.
Further weakness would put the longer-term 200-day moving average into focus. That indicator currently stands near 7,105 and is closely watched by investors as a broader measure of whether a market remains in a long-term uptrend.
The technical setup effectively places the S&P 500 between two important thresholds. On the upside, 7,816.70 stands between the index and another record-setting run toward 8,000. On the downside, the cluster around 7,550 to 7,620 represents the first major test of whether the recent rally still has enough support to withstand additional selling.
