Before President Barack Obama addressed the nation with the 2015 State of the Union, STFU was already a top-searched topic when used in conjunction with SOTU. While some people remarked they simply confused SOTU for STFU, a slang term that mean shut the f--- up, others wanted to use STFU purposely.

During the speech, some people wrote they noticed Rep. Gwen Moore, D-Wis., held up a yellow pencil for the victims of the Charlie Hebdo tragedy. The pencil represents free speech and will “honor those who lost their lives in the pursuit of open ideas and free expression.”
