After months of speculation, Taco Bell has finally confirmed that it is bringing back a fan-favorite menu item – the Mexican Pizza.

The Mexican Pizza will return to Taco Bell’s menu on Menu on May 19.

With a cult following, the Mexican Pizza’s revival hasn’t been by accident, as a petition on Change.Org to bring back the menu item to Taco Bell has been signed by over 171,000 fans.

When Taco Bell removed the Mexican Pizza from its menu two years ago, it caused a firestorm among fans of the beloved item as customers hoped and demanded that the chain bring back its version of pizza.

Taco Bell took the Mexican Pizza off its menu in November 2020 as it looked to streamline its menu during the pandemic.

The pizza, which was first introduced in 1985 as the Pizzazz Pizza, is made of two crispy flour shells, layered with beans, pizza sauce, seasoned beef, tomatoes, and a melted three-cheese blend. It retails for $4.49. When sold with just beans and no beef, it can be a vegetarian meal.

Krish Jagirdar, a Mexican Pizza super fan and the organizer of the Change.Org petition, said in a statement, “Like many Indian-Americans who grew up vegetarian, we had limited access to the ‘fun’ fast food, so Taco Bell became a bridge to belonging in American culture for many kids like me who grew up in immigrant households.

“That's what made it especially devastating when the Mexican Pizza was pulled from menus in 2020, but fast forward two years later and I found myself on a conference call with the Taco Bell team as they shared news of the return of the Mexican Pizza, showing that listening to their fans is clearly embedded in their DNA. It's one of the many reasons Taco Bell is more than just another fast-food restaurant.”

To put the Mexican Pizza back on its menu, Taco Bell said it worked to streamline operations and ingredient sourcing to “leave a lighter footprint” through packaging.

Taco Bell Rewards members will be able to get a bite of a Mexican Pizza two days early on May 17, Taco Bell said.

In Aruba, Costa Rica, and the Dominican Republic, the Mexican Pizza will also return at Taco Bell on May 19.
