  • Taylor Swift's boyfriend Joe Alwyn trended on Twitter amid Swift's 2023 Grammy Awards appearance
  • Thousands of fans asked whether Alwyn has what it takes to protect Swift at all costs
  • Alwyn did not join Swift at the music awards show

Taylor Swift's fans are once again asking her boyfriend Joe Alwyn if he can fight as the pop star attended the 65th Annual Grammy Awards Sunday, marking her first public appearance for 2023.

The 31-year-old British actor, who has been dating the 33-year-old "Midnights" artist for six years, is trending on Twitter despite his absence from the music awards ceremony at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles.

Thousands of Swift's fans took to Twitter to ask whether Alwyn can "fight" Sunday after the singer hit the Grammys red carpet and wowed in a midnight blue Roberto Cavalli two-piece set, featuring a crystal-embellished long-sleeved crop top and matching floor-length skirt.

Questioning Alwyn's fighting abilities is an age-old joke that fans would make every time Swift makes a public appearance and turns heads with her look, according to Cosmopolitan.

"Let me be the first one to ask: Can Joe Alwyn fight???" one fan tweeted Sunday, alongside a photo of the "Lover" singer on the Grammys 2023 red carpet.

"Joe Alwyn every time Taylor Swift makes a public appearance and the whole app gets flooded with 'CAN JOE ALWYN FIGHT?'" another fan tweeted alongside a clip of Sydney Sweeney's "Euphoria" character Cassie looking scared as she hides in a bathroom and holds the doorknob.

"Joe Alwyn [is] sitting at home right now getting ready for strangers on Twitter to ask him if he can fight," a third fan wrote, while another quipped, "Joe Alwyn, you [are a] lucky son of a b—h."

It wasn't the first time this year that Alwyn trended on the platform due to fans questioning if he has what it takes to protect Swift at all costs.

When Swift dropped last month the official music video for "Lavender Haze," a song inspired by the couple's romance, the "can he fight" question resurfaced on Twitter.

"Whenever Taylor is serving, Swifties: JOE ALWYN CAN YOU FIGHT[?]" one fan wrote at the time.

Another commented, "Does Joe Alwyn know how to fight because I'm throwing hands."

Swift attended the 2023 Grammys without her beau by her side, but his absence is not new. The pair have kept their relationship out of the limelight since they began dating and rarely appear in public together, TMZ reported.

But their relationship is going strong. In October last year, the pair were spotted out and about in New York City seemingly going furniture shopping.

Swift and Alwyn were also photographed cozying up together during a romantic getaway in the Bahamas last summer.

The "Bejeweled" singer was nominated for four awards at this year's Grammys: song of the year, best country song, best song written for visual media and best music video.

Swift reportedly earned her first victory in the 2023 Grammy Awards in the best music video category for her self-directed "All Too Well: The Short Film," beating Adele's "Easy On Me" directed by Xavier Dolan, BTS' "Yet To Come" directed by Yong Seok Choi and Harry Styles' "As It Was" directed by Tanu Muino, among others.
