A teen girl has succumbed to death after she took poison in front of her younger brother following an argument with him about playing a mobile game, police said.

The 16-year-old unidentified girl from Mumbai died Saturday, while she was hospitalized for treatment. The teenager consumed rat poison while she was at her home the night before. The girl's body was sent for an autopsy and handed over to the family, police said as per Times Now.

On Friday night, the girl reportedly fought with her brother after she did not get a chance to play a game on the mobile phone.

"The incident took place around 11:30 on Friday night. There was a minor quarrel between the 16-year-old victim and her younger brother over playing games on mobile," Santosh Kharde, an investigating officer said, ANI News reported.

The girl, who was upset after the incident, bought rat poison from a nearby pharmacy and consumed it in front of her brother, police said.

"The younger brother informed the family about it. The family immediately took the girl to a hospital. Police reached the hospital on the information. The girl died during treatment," Kharde told the outlet.

Police have started investigating the case.

There have been multiple reports of increasing suicide cases among teenagers in India after the COVID-19 lockdown. Factors like emotional stress, study-related pressure and other societal issues are found to be driving causes for the trend.
