Namco Bandai has just announced the release date for Tekken Tag Tournament 2. The sequel to the 1999 game will launch on Sept. 14th in Europe and Sept. 11th in the United States.

The next installment in the Tekken series will be available on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 platforms, according to a press release from Namco Bandai.

Tekken Tag Tournament 2 will boast the largest roster of fighters in Tekken history, the release states.

The classic fighting game follow-up will also feature exclusive DLC characters depending on where fans pre-order the game from. For the game's UK version, pre-ordering from ShopTo will unlock Michelle Chang and Angel. Those ordering from Zavvi in advance will get Kunimitsu and Ancient Ogre.

The We Are Tekken edition was also announced, which is a special edition packaged in a metal casing containing the game's original soundtrack and an additional mix CD, an art book with over 200 pages and a behind-the-scenes video with Harada San.

A new mode will be introduced in Tekken Tag Tournament 2 known as Fight Lab, which allows players to customize the moves and appearance of new training character Combot.

Players that clear the innovative Fight Lab will have mastered the complexities of Tekken and own their own customized Combot, which can be used in offline and non-ranked online play, said the release.

Another addition includes solo fighter vs. tag-team battles and one-on-one fighting, enhancing gameplay options for Tekken fans. The Pair Play function will allow up to four players to engage in an ultimate team battle.

Namco Bandai said at a presentation that they expect Tekken Tag Tournament 2 to sell 2 million copies, according to EventHubs. This was the same number that Capcom predicted for Street Fighter X Tekken, which was launched on March 6th and only ended up reaching the 1.4 million mark. Capcom believed this was due to saturation of the fighting genre in the video game market, with too many similar titles launching within a short time frame.

The Tekken series originated as an arcade game in 1994 and has since come to be known as one of the most prominent fight titles in the gaming industry. Franchise sales amount to more than 40 million units to date, and the series is recognized for its iconic characters such as Heihachi Mishima, Jin Kazama and Anna Williams. A live-action movie based on the Tekken storyline was created in 2010, with Jon Foo portraying protagonist Jin Kazama.
