Novak Djokovic has been on a tear in 2020 as he’s picking up momentum for another trophy to his decorated career. He cruised by Russian Karen Kkachanov in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2 in order to make it to the semi-finals of the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships. This win sets up another matchup against French tennis sensation Gael Monfils.

Monfils is currently ranked number nine in the world and is known to be one of the more exciting players on tour. He is recognized for his sheer athleticism and incredible shot-making skills. Fans and players lookout for these dazzling moves whenever he’s on the floor as he lets them out in the most unsuspecting times. Whether it’s a tweener, a flashy drop shot, or an explosive jumping groundstroke, Monfils’ array of moves always puts on a show.

But if there’s one thing that has stood in the way of Monfils in going higher in the standings, it’s definitely Djokovic. The two have faced off for sixteen times as professionals and all 16 have come in favor of the World Number 1. When asked about what his new game plan will be against the Serbian, Monfils quipped that he doesn’t know. “ I have no idea right now because 16 times it was the wrong one,” Monfils said. “Hopefully the 17th will be the good one.”

On Djokovic’s end, he’s looking to continue the pace he’s set for himself this year. “I don’t know if I’m playing the best tennis of my career, that’s a big statement, but I’m feeling and playing well,” said the recently crowned Australian Open Champion. Despite dominating the early part of 2020, he remains focused on whatever obstacle comes in his way. When asked about what his thoughts are about Monfils, he doesn’t hold anything back as he’s capable of his opponent’s ability.

He shared, by way of the ATP tour, that Monfils is a highly talented individual. “[Gael is] one of the best if not the best athlete in our sport. He moves so well. He's so fit. For me, he has the most interesting game in tennis. I love watching him play and I love playing against him.”
