Since “Terminator 2: Judgment Day,” the “Terminator” has, unfortunately, been a victim to depreciating returns with its three follow-up films. But with the first trailer out for “Terminator: Dark Fate,” director Tim Miller hopes he can help turn the franchise around with the help of series creator James Cameron.

With the initial trailer, which was released Thursday, fans get their first look at a long-awaited return by one of the film’s most iconic heroines.

But first, the trailer introduces fans to newcomers Mackenzie Davis and Natalia Reyes. The pair is on the run from a new Terminator, played by Diego Boneta, which is capable of splitting into two units. It also becomes clear that Mackenzie Davis’ Grace isn’t entirely human, either, as she battles this next-gen Terminator.

It’s at this point that Sarah Conner makes her presence known.

Linda Hamilton is front and center in this debut preview, marking her first on-screen appearance in the “Terminator” franchise since 1991’s “Terminator 2.” Despite being older, she still appears as ready to fight as she did in 1991, and with plenty of guns to boot.

And while there’s no sight in the trailer of her son and prophesized savior of humanity, John Connor, he is confirmed to be appearing in the film.

Arnold Schwarzenegger also makes a brief appearance in this first trailer as yet another T-800 unit that seems to have been living in hiding for some time.

“Terminator: Dark Fate” is scheduled for release Nov. 1, 2019.
