  • The game is a standalone spin-off of the "Assault on Dragon Keep" DLC
  • "Tiny Tina's Wonderlands" will release on March 25, 2022

The first gameplay trailer for “Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands” recently went live, and “Borderlands” fans can expect more of the same gameplay but with a new coat of paint that should be more than enough to refresh the game’s tried-and-tested formula.

Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands” is a spin-off of the “Borderlands” series. The game is set in a table-top fantasy RPG world similar to the “Assault on Dragon Keep” DLC for “Borderlands 2,” where the titular Tiny Tina is hosting a classic pen-and-paper TTRPG for players.

Gameplay-wise, “Wonderlands” still features the same chaotic gunfights filled with wacky enemies and piles of loot. However, the developers decided to dive a little bit deeper into the TTRPG fantasy by introducing magic, melee weapons and theme-appropriate ranged weapons.

Based on the trailer, players will be able to sling spells and swing melee weapons against a cast of fantasy-based enemies.

Magic was also present in the “Dragon Keep” DLC, but the spells served mostly as alternative options for a player’s grenade. While Gearbox hasn’t specified how magic in “Wonderlands” will work, it’ll be interesting to see whether they will go with a spellcasting system or go down the grenade route again.

As for melee weapons, the usual ensemble of fantasy swords, maces and axes will be available. These will be actual, wieldable weapons and not just reskins of a character’s quick melee action. Toward the end of the trailer, the player can be seen throwing a magic hammer that can be recalled to the user’s hand similar to Marvel’s Thor or “God of War’s” Kratos.

Despite the addition of magic and melee, “Wonderlands” is still very much a “Borderlands” game. Players can expect millions of gun variants (including a new crossbow-like pistol) and crazy, legendary weapons that can define how the game is played.

The trailer gave fans a brief look at what “Wonderlands” is going to be like, but other than a couple of minutes of looting and shooting, details regarding characters, ability trees and other game mechanics still haven’t been shown to the public.

“Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands” is scheduled to release on March 25, 2022.
