Tom Hardy is officially set to portray Elton John in “Rocketman,” an upcoming biopic of the larger-than-life musician’s career.

Since the spring, rumors have been flying that the “Dark Knight Rises” star might portray Elton John, but on Wednesday, “Rocketman” producers officially confirmed Hardy’s involvement in the film. Previously, Justin Timberlake had also been considered for the role.

“Rocketman” is set to follow Elton John’s rise from a musical prodigy to an international superstar, incorporating the musician’s most famous hits. John himself will re-record many of his hit songs for the project, though it is unclear whether Hardy will sing the songs himself.

"Tom is a stellar talent who will add extraordinary depth and nuance in bringing Elton’s story to life,” Rocket Pictures CEO Steve Hamilton Shaw said in a statement to Comingsoon.net. “We are excited to have such a gifted actor on board, and equally excited to be in the hands of Peter Schlessel and the entire Focus Features team.”

"Tom is quickly becoming known as one of the world's most versatile actors, and like others at the top of their craft, he has proven his ability to transform himself completely into the character or subject found in the material," Schlessel said. "We are confident that Tom will embody the physicality and spirit of Sir Elton. This, in conjunction with the creative team led by Michael and Rocket Pictures, will provide the foundation for something that will be a unique cinematic event.”

Schlessel also confirmed on Wednesday that “Rocketman” will be distributed by Focus Features for a wide release across the United States.

“Rocketman” is set to begin filming in fall 2014.
