  • Leicester City's chase for Vestergaard finally comes to an end
  • Vestergaard is expected to fill in the void left by the injured Fofana
  • Vestergaard has been on Leicester City's radar since last year

Jannik Vestergaard is finally headed to Leicester City after Southampton reportedly accepted the latest offer from the Foxes.

The 29-year-old is expected to fill the void left by Wesley Fofana, who is expected to miss an undisclosed period due to a broken leg that he sustained in a preseason match.

For Leicester City, the development puts an end to Leicester City’s continued chase for the Danish player.

The Foxes was already a subject of interest by Brendan Rodger that dates back to January 2020.

However, what remains unclear is the final fee that the Foxes and Saints agreed on. Sources told Sky Sports News that it was worth £15 million ($20 million), while another unnamed source claimed it was lower than that amount.

Regardless of the numbers of the deal, Vestergaard is now free to travel to Leicester for him to undergo a medical evaluation and discuss personal terms with the Saints.

Last season, Vestergaard made 32 appearances under Ralph Hasenhuttl, where Southampton finished 15th in the English Premier League.

He also saw action for Denmark in the Euro 2020 that reached the semi-final stage.

Vestergaard joined Southampton in July 2018 following an £18 million ($24.9 million) deal with Borussia Monchengladbach.

Rodgers was trying to get him to their side as early as January 2020 with one year left on the Danish player’s contract.

In a report from The Athletic, the initial fee is believed to be £14 million ($19 million) and may increase to £15 million ($20 million) if certain add-ons to the deal are met.

Aside from that, it could grow bigger if the Foxes qualify for the UEFA Champions League.

The development should give Rodgers and Leicester City some breathing room following the unfortunate injury of Fofana.

The 20-year-old ended up with a broken leg in a friendly against Europa League Champions Villareal at the King Power Stadium last week. Fofana incurred the injury after he was tackled by Fer Nino.

According to Rodgers, Fofana dislocated his ankle and fractured his fibia. He is expected to be out until at least 2022. The Foxes won that match against Villareal.
