KEY POINTS

  • John McGinn is the latest player linked to join Liverpool
  • McGinn may be too expensive to acquire for the Reds
  • Liverpool will skim for cheaper deals to plug its midfielder void next season

Liverpool needs to find players to fill up the spot that will be vacated by Gini Wijnaldum.

The Dutch player is set to move to Paris Saint-Germain, and it appears the Reds fancy someone to take his place in John McGinn of Aston Villa.

Liverpool is expected to skim the transfer market this summer for a midfielder, and the name of the 26-year-old has cropped up according to a report from the Sunday Post.

But for the Reds to snag the Dutch footballer, they would have to meet the asking price of Aston Villa.

The Lions reportedly want £50 million ($69 million) for McGinn, The Sunday Post reported.

Last season, McGinn made 37 appearances and showed his stock. He established himself as a hard-working, industrious, and press-resistant defender.

On the offensive side, he scored three times and issued five assists in what was an impressive outing.

However, the asking fee may be a problem for the Reds. Pundits feel that Liverpool is unlikely to shell out $69 million for McGinn and may opt for other targets.

It remains to be seen if the Reds would at least try and negotiate for a lower fee.

McGinn becomes the latest name linked to Anfield who has yet to figure out their midfielder woes.

One name mentioned in a previous report is Florian Neuhaus, someone who has been compared to Tony Kroos.

There is the growing belief that the Reds will go after the 24-year-old midfielder to fill in the void that will be left by Wijnaldum.

But the problem here is that other clubs also have the German football player on their radar. That includes Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Juventus and Manchester City.

Compared to McGinn, Neuhaus would be cheaper but still expensive with a pricetag of £34.4 million ($48.5 million).

Other than Wijnaldum, the Reds may end up losing another player too. In another previous post, Xherdan Shaqiri was mentioned as a player who could be leaving due to a lack of playing time.

The 29-year-old dodged questions on his future, opting to focus on his Euro 2020 stint.
