  • A transfer insider reveals Jurgen Klopp has been personally asking about a possible replacement for Gini Wijnaldum

Liverpool could be working on something big in the next transfer window once again.

A series of injuries has been the biggest obstacle for Liverpool this season. After the dour draw against Manchester United, recent reports suggest that the absence of Diogo Jota and Virgil Van Djik is now taking its toll on the reigning English Premier League champions.

However, the Reds are believed to be secretly looking to catch another big fish in the transfer market, Liverpool Echo reported.

According to the report, Liverpool is yearning to repeat the signing of Jota and has already started the recruitment process.

“Behind the scenes right now at Anfield, efforts are ongoing to secure the next sensational talent who will help Liverpool to continue asserting their dominance at the top of European and domestic football,” the article wrote.

"There is an understanding that the Reds are looking at next summer, to carry out any deal and they are known for getting deals done early in the market.”

It can be recalled that Jota’s move to Liverpool was done discretely and through the help of renowned agent Jorge Mendes.

This time, the Reds is said to be hoping to collaborate with Mendes once again as he “could be an ideal man to utilize in helping to set up any deal.”

Upon his arrival at Anfield, Jota quickly made his mark in Jurgen Klopp’s side, scoring five goals in his first nine English top-flight appearances.

The Portuguese striker’s hot start was cut short after he incurred an injury against FC Midtjylland in December.

Last week, Liverpool boss Klopp confirmed that his star signing still needs “a few weeks” before he can finally rejoin the squad for training.

“It will still take time,” the manager said of Jota’s recovery. “And he is a few weeks away from team training. There is nothing really to say, it takes time. There was no surgery needed, which was good, but it was a proper injury.”

“It is not a little knock or something; no, no, and it will still take time,” he continued. “There is no real timeframe there.”

Meanwhile, Liverpool’s star midfielder Gini Wijnaldum has been constantly linked to a move away from Anfield. According to The Sunday Times’ and transfer insider Duncan Castles, Klopp himself has started asking about Brighton’s Yves Bissouma as a potential replacement.

“My understanding is that [Jurgen] Klopp has done some work to ask questions about [Yves] Bissouma to people who know him well,” Castles recently divulged on “The Transfer Window” podcast. “Again this suggests that this is something Liverpool have on a potential list of [Wijnaldum] replacements.”
