KEY POINTS

  • Loris Karius likely headed to Montpellier HSC
  • Liverpool has no room for Loris Karius with Allison Becker at the helm
  • Liverpool hopes to earn profit by dealing away Karius

Goalkeeper Loris Karius is back in Germany but his return to Anfield may be short-lived. After spending the last two years on loan to Besiktas, several clubs have expressed interest in the 27-year-old goalkeeper. Among the clubs considering him include Montpellier HSC and Herta Berlin.

However, reports have it that La Paillade is the favorite to secure the services of the German player. Karius has two years left in his deal with The Reds. However, Liverpool has reportedly given the goalie permissions to search for a new club this summer.

If Montepellier is bent on acquiring the services of Karius, Liverpool has set its asking fee for the German player. The Reds are seeking $7.7 million for Karius. This is notably higher from the amount they paid to Mainz back in 2016. Liverpool got Karius for $6 million at the time.

Karius found himself out of Anfield following a forgettable Champions League final back in 2018. He made crucial errors against Real Madrid that cost them the match. Before the 2018-19 season, Karius was dealt with the Turkish giants on loan. Besiktas initially paid $2.7 million for the loan and had an option for a permanent transfer if certain performance-related criteria were met.

The German goalie appeared in 67 matches across all competitions in the two years he played at Istanbul. He performed well but his stint was marred by a dispute on wages with the club. This led to the termination of his contract in May and returning to Liverpool. Unfortunately, it appears The Reds prefer to deal with him to other clubs who are willing to meet their asking price.

Given the choice, Karius aired his preference to stay at Anfield. But with that seems unlikely, he has one wish to whichever club he could end up with next.

"I will have to be playing if I actually change clubs,” Karius said to Transfermarkt.

A move to another club is seen as the plausible alternative considering Karius holds low chances of being the top goalkeeper for Jurgen Klopp. Allison Becker continues to be the club's no. 1 goalkeeper, establishing himself as one of the best stoppers in the world.
