Manchester United are reportedly on the verge of signing Sporting Lisbon midfielder Bruno Fernandes for approximately $67 million.

Sports journalist Nicolo Schira, who is an expert in the transfer market, tweeted about the news saying both the parties are in negotiations over the move.

A Portuguese media firm, Correio da Manha has reported that Fernandes, who is keen on the move, is due to fly to England before the middle of the week and the signing is expected to be completed before the deadline day as Man Utd boss Ole Gunnar Solsjaer is keen on roping in a playmaker in his squad.

The 25-year-old midfielder scored a brace in Sporting’s 3-1 win over Setubal in the top flight of Portuguese football, Primeira Liga. With nine wins, five losses and two draws, Sporting are currently placed fourth on the points table.

After suffering their worst start in the history of Premier League, Man Utd have now climbed to No. 5 having won nine matches, lost six and drawn seven.

On Jan. 5 when Sporting faced off against arch-rivals FC Porto, Man Utd boss Solskjaer and his assistant Mike Phelan were in the stands to watch Fernandes. Even though the Portuguese failed to score that day and his side ended on the losing side, Man Utd are believed to be interested in signing the midfielder.

According to Portuguese outlet Record, the important terms of the deal are "already negotiated and understood" following talks between Man Utd executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward and Sporting President Frederico Varandas.

However, Solskjaer has refused to comment on the possible signing in public and has insisted the former Premier League champions will only sign long-term targets in the January transfer window, despite having a few players out with injuries.
