Despite over 19 years of marriage, the stability of the David and Victoria Beckham’s relationship has been constantly called into question. Although the couple has shown no sign of splitting up, in a new interview, the former Spice Girl reflected on how the media attention her romance received over the years has impacted her life.

The couple, who share four children together-sons Brooklyn, 19, Romeo, 16, Cruz, 13, and daughter Harper, 7-have been the epitome of #CoupleGoals since the late 1990s. Even though their relationship has been plagued by divorce rumors, the 44-year-old revealed that behind closed doors, she and her husband have managed to build a strong bond.

In her British Vogue cover story for October, Beckham admitted she is no longer surprised when her marriage with the former soccer player undergoes media scrutiny. “People have been making things up about our relationship for 20 years,” she told the publication.

Although the clothing designer and her husband have learned to “[ignore] the nonsense,” it hasn’t been as easy for their loved ones to tune out the noise. “These things have a wider effect on the people around us, and that’s unfair,” Beckham explained.

The frequent reports claiming their marriage is on the rocks have only helped the couple see the good in their long-term romance. Beckham revealed, “we both realize that we are stronger together than we are as individuals.”

“It’s all about the family unit. We are much stronger, the six of us, than we would be if we were individuals. We respect that family bond and that is key,” the fashion designer added.

While the couple hasn’t made a habit of responding to tabloid stories, in June, they released a statement denying allegations suggesting they were headed for a split. The statement was issued after rumors claiming the retired athlete cheated on the former singer surfaced.

“There is no statement due or divorce,” their rep said at the time.

“This is just fake social media news. This is all very bizarre and an embarrassing waste of time,” the spokesperson added.

Beckham’s British Vogue issue is expected to hit newsstands on Friday.
