Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) legend Georges St-Pierre (26-2) is nearing full health and is not closing the door on another fight.

The former welterweight kingpin returned after a four-year hiatus in November last year when he moved up in weight and defeated Michael Bisping to become the new middleweight champion at UFC 217.

"GSP" had notably become just the fourth two-weight champion in UFC history at the time, but repeatedly mentioned later how the 15-pound weight gain negatively affected his body, having previously reigned over the 170-pound division for six years.

And, according to him, that's what ultimately led to his case of ulcerative colitis as he was to vacate his new middleweight crown less than a month after winning it, though many believe he had no plans of defending the belt anyway against interim champion Robert Whittaker at the time.

It is now nearly a year since the Canadian vacated his title as he provided an update on his status.

“Definitely the worst has passed,” St-Pierre told MMA Fighting. “I’m dosing down the medication that I have. The medication is anti-inflammatory, so you have to dose it down. … Not in one shot, you can’t stop in one shot, but I’m dosing it down every month and soon it will be past, a story of the past. As it goes right now, pretty much all of the symptoms are almost gone.”

That's good news for St-Pierre and his legion of fans, especially as he previously stated he planned on returning to the octagon even after he was diagnosed with the condition.

However, he will only sign a contract for a fight once he is 100 percent ready.

"I don’t want any contract to fight somebody right now,” St-Pierre explained. "Because the minute you sign a contract, the mental warfare starts, and stress is something that amplifies everything. So I want to make sure I deal with it, I take care of it, and when everything will be finished, I will be able to look forward. My health is the most important thing for me."

"[But I’m] absolutely not [closing the door on fighting again]. I’m keeping the door open. When I close it, then people will know. But right now it’s held open."

In his second run with the promotion, St-Pierre has repeatedly gone on about wanting the biggest fights that would cement his place as the greatest fighter of all time.

Last month, the 37-year-old mentioned possibly facing the winner of the UFC 229 main event between champion Khabib Nurmagomedov and Conor McGregor and would even drop down to 155 pounds.

St-Pierre currently weighs around 183 pounds, less than some lightweight contenders, so it would certainly be possible. In addition, winning the lightweight title would make him the first UFC fighter to win a championship in three different divisions.

However, he reiterated the UFC would likely not let him do so, especially after vacating the middleweight title.

“I can’t say yet, yes or no [to fighting the UFC 229 main event winner]. One thing I know is the UFC will never want me to go to 155,” St-Pierre added with a laugh. "They will be scared that I will ride off into the sunset with their belt again. And I understand them. I understand them from a business standpoint."
