Two U.S. missiles hit a primary school in Iran in the opening days of the war.

The Trump administration is pushing back on a United Nations report that said there was "reasonable grounds" to believe the U.S. committed a war crime in Iran when it bombed a primary school in Minab during the opening days of the war.

At least 157 people were killed in the attack, including 123 children who were between six and 13 years old. Two missiles hit the the Shajareh Tayyebeh Primary School which was located about 236 feet from an Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) naval complex. The school began operating in buildings that had been converted from IRGC use in 2016.

"The Trump Administration formally withdrew from the UN Human Rights Council following the Council's consistent failures to uphold its own 'values' as it pushes anti-American rhetoric and antisemitism, all while it appeases repressive regimes, thus making a mockery of the very 'rights' it claims to protect," a State Department official told ABC News.

The official added that the U.S. does not "give credibility" to the report or its findings.

"The protection of civilians is of the utmost importance to the U.S. We refer to the Department of War with respect to specific questions on U.S. operations," the State Department official told ABC News.

The report stated that the strike on the school "went beyond mere negligence."

"Rather, the U.S. directed the strikes at the building of the school while being aware of a substantial risk of striking a civilian object and acting recklessly as regards the possibility that this would happen," the report states.

The document also noted that it should have been clear on satellite imagery that the building was now being used as a school. The report noted that a wall separated the school from the IRGC facilities.

"The strike on the primary school was part of an attack on several targets in the adjacent IRGC compound. CCTV footage shows munitions striking the area of the naval base and school and satellite imagery shows seven distinct detonation points at the school and nearby base," the report states.
