  • Rumors have it that "Uncharted 5" is in the works
  • Neither Sony nor Naughty Dog has confirmed this
  • "Uncharted: The Legacy of Thieves Collection" releases Friday on PS5

Game developer Naughty Dog released "Uncharted 4: A Thief's End" in 2016 as a PlayStation 4-exclusive and described the game as a send-off of the franchise, but it appears that the team has never closed the door on the series. Amidst rumors swirling around about "Uncharted 5," key persons are weighing in on the possibility of a next game installment.

Naughty Dog's "Uncharted" series is back with "The Legacy of Thieves Collection" releasing on PS5 on Friday, and the "Uncharted" movie is coming to theaters in February. With the major developments happening in the series, some fans could not help but toy with the possibility that "Uncharted 5" could be in the works.

"I think we can say for certain that we can never say never," "Uncharted: The Lost Legacy" creative director Sean Escayg told Games Radar. "Yeah. Uncharted is a franchise we love – that the studio loves. I love, and Kurt loves. It's a world we want to see more of. So I can certainly say that," he added.

The creative director's statement about the rumored game installment is not confirming anything. However, his comment does not also sound like the series is going to stay dormant forever.

Also, even if Naughty Dog has other things to work on, it looks like Sony might want to revive the franchise soon. "Uncharted 4: A Theif's End" was among the highest-rated games and among the best-selling PlayStation 4-exclusives.

According to rumors, a new "Uncharted" game is in development but it is not under Naughty Dog's studio. In April 2021, a report surfaced online claiming that Bend Studio, the game developer of "Days Gone," was assigned to develop a new entry in the "Uncharted" series, but it has since requested to be removed from the project.

So far, there is no solid confirmation if the supposed "Uncharted 5" title is indeed in the works and which studio is handling its development. It may be recalled that Neil Druckmann mentioned in 2016 that he is interested in what other studios could accomplish in the "Uncharted" series.

"If they made a great game I’d be excited. I’d want to play an Uncharted I didn’t work on. It’d be a lot of fun. Obviously, we would have a big part in it as the creators of the franchise. We’d just want to make sure they get the essence of it right," he said in a previous interview.
