The “This Is Us” midseason finale left audiences with many questions, but there is one big question that has gone unanswered for over a year now: How did Jack die? Sterling K. Brown promised that the answer will be revealed in 2018.

“Before the season is over, we see how Jack dies. So I can say it will be within the next eight episodes of ‘This Is Us,’” Brown, who plays adult Randall, told Entertainment Weekly.

“This Is Us” has given audiences clues about Jack’s death. We know that there was a bad fire that completely destroyed the Pearson family’s home. The night of the fire, Rebecca (Mandy Moore) seemed to drive back to her burned down house with some of Jack’s (Milo Ventimiglia) belongings. This leads viewers to assume Jack died in a fire, but the circumstances are still unclear. It seems the mystery won’t be dragged into Season 3.

Executive producer Isaac Aptaker explained that the teenage flashbacks are getting close to finally being at the time where Jack dies. Kevin (Logan Shroyer) is in the leg cast, and they have a dog. However, there is one other element that has yet to be put into place.

“In Kevin’s episode, we see how he breaks his leg. So we’re advancing the timeline and we are approaching the [death],” Aptaker told the Hollywood Reporter. “We now have the dog and we have the leg in the cast. The last element that needs to fall into place before we can reach that day is Randall meeting the girlfriend that we see in 201. If you’re keeping track, we’re definitely quickly approaching the time of his death.”

The emotional drama isn’t just in the past though. The “This Is Us” Season 2 winter finale ended with Kevin (Justin Hartley) getting a DUI. Only he wasn’t just endangering himself. Tess (Eris Baker) snuck into his car too. Randall and Beth (Susan Kelechi Watson) were terrified when they realized she was missing and furious when they got the call from the police. Still, Randall will want to help his brother.

“In 2018, you see Randall working very hard to extend graciousness to his brother because his brother was present for him at one of the lowest points of his life, and now he wants to reciprocate that. But it’s hard to do that when you endanger somebody’s child,” Brown warned.

“This Is Us” Season 2 returns Tuesday, Jan. 2 on NBC.
