Police have released video footage of two men hurling avocados at a deli clerk and breaking his jaw last month. The attack occurred just before 5 a.m. at Stadium Gourmet Deli on E 161st St. in the Bronx on May 29 after an argument about food, according to police officials.

CBS reported Tuesday that the incident occurred after the men tried to order food and a deli worker who did not speak English could not understand them. After the incident escalated, 21-year-old store clerk Amir Alzabibi reportedly attempted to kick them out of the deli.

The video shows one of the men grabbing multiple avocados, getting into a pitching position and throwing them at the clerk and other deli employees. The other suspect also began throwing avocados and bananas at the employee. The victim sustained a laceration to his face, fractures to his face and a broken jaw. Alzabibi was in serious but stable condition at Lincoln Hospital, though an employee at the deli said he had to have surgery on his eyes.

“This action, what he do, it’s not normal,” an employee told a local NBC affiliate. “They start arguing with each other and the customer grabbed the avocado and threw it right in his face.”

A description of both suspects was provided. The first suspect was a Hispanic male; in the video, he is wearing a black T-shirt, blue jeans and multicolored sneakers. The second suspect was a black male last seen in a white T-shirt, a blue vest, blue jeans and blue and white sneakers. Both suspects were described as being between 25 and 30 years old, 5-foot-7 to 5-foot-10 and 170 to 190 pounds.

The owner of the deli explained the injured employee is new to the store and does not speak clear English, so the assault may have been a result of the language barrier. The two men smashed watermelons and threw merchandise around the store before leaving.
