  • Man reportedly was aggressive with theater staff while looking for his seat
  • First confronted a man allegedly trying to film the opening crawl
  • Struck another moviegoer who was checking about a phone call

A moviegoer was removed from a screening of “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” after screaming at other moviegoers over their cellphones.

The scene erupted before a 7:30 p.m. screening Thursday at a Scotiabank Cineplex Theatre in Vancouver. One witness said a man came into the theater and “aggressively” asked a theater employee where his seat was. A few minutes after the man was seated, he reportedly started screaming at another theatergoer who had allegedly taken his phone out to film the opening crawl.

Other moviegoers began filming the man’s tantrum and quickly posted them online.

The witness, who identified himself as Joe Bond, said he was out with his wife for their first “date night” since having their second child. He said as the man screamed at the other moviegoer, he got a call on his own phone.

“I thought I was getting a phone call from our baby sitter,” Bond told Global News. “It was the first time my wife and I had been on a date with both our kids being looked after, so I pulled out my phone really discreetly to see if it was the baby sitter calling. It wasn’t, so I put it back.”

However, it allegedly agitated the man further, who turned and started screaming at the rest of the theater to turn off their phones.

“I told him to calm down, and he didn’t calm down, and then he hit me in the face,” Bond said.

Theater staff quickly ran inside to try and break up the scene before escorting the man out. He was showered with boos and chants from the audience to get out while he continued screaming back at the audience.

“Luckily, the Force was strong with the cineplex team who ended up rewinding the film for the remaining guests,” Scotiabank spokeswoman Sarah Van Lange said in a statement. “They got a round of applause out of appreciation from the fans!”
