Manchester City cut the gap at the top of the Premier League to five points with an emphatic 4-0 victory over West Brom at the Etihad.

Two goals from Sergio Aguero and one each from Carlos Tevez and David Silva combined with Manchester United's shock defeat to Wigan gave a huge boost to City's seemingly fading season.

City went into the match on a poor run of form that had seen their deficit to rivals Manchester United extended to eight points. But any disappointment they may have been feeling was put aside as Roberto Mancini's men produced their best victory in quite some time.

The home side got the perfect start when Sergio Aguero put City ahead in just the sixth minute of action. The Argentinian burst through the middle and unleashed a low shot that went in across West Brom goalkeeper Ben Foster from the edge of the penalty area.

But City had to wait until nine minutes after the restart before getting the all-important second goal. Samir Nasri played a clever ball through to Aguero in the area and the diminutive forward got his second goal of the match with a cool finish.

And the team that led the Premier League for much of this season did not have to wait long before they were celebrating a third goal. This time Aguero played creator as he pulled the ball back across the area from down the left that found Carlos Tevez on the penalty spot who side-footed home. The goal was Tevez's first for the club in a difficult season that saw him spend much of the campaign at home in Argentina.

And the icing was put on City's victory when the man who had been City's inspiration for so long this season, David Silva grabbed City's third in just 10 minutes to make it 4-0. The little Spaniard produced a lovely chipped finish over Ben Foster after West Brom had given the ball away in the middle of the park.
