  • The game, which is only playable with a VR headset, was used by math teacher Charles Coomber to present his online math lesson
  • Coomber receives massive praise from the gaming community for the innovative use of the game for online learning

Half-Life: Alyx is undoubtedly one of, if not the best virtual reality game to date. Highlighted by its immersive and realistic design powered by virtual reality, it is easy to see why more and more people are getting hooked by Valve’s latest game.

Apparently though, the latest installation of the Half-Life series has other uses, particularly for learning. In fact, a teacher named Charles Coomber used it to perform his entire math class!

Coomber posted his online math lesson on YouTube, noting in the description that he made the decision because he had “to teach today, but Half Life Alyx just came out.”

The teacher started on Alyx’s balcony and even got the time to joke, saying that it was his house in a community that is in a lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic. He then gave a brief look at the surroundings of the game before proceeding inside and using the window pains and markers to teach.

Coomber drew several diagrams and went on to discuss “angle vocabulary.” The whole lesson lasted for 16 minutes, much to the amazement of gamers and viewers who watched the whole video.

In the comment section, Coomber drew praise for his creative and innovative attempt to deliver his lesson amid the coronavirus-forced school shutdowns.

“This man just tricked me into watching an entire 6th-grade math lesson,” one viewer commented.

A lot of viewers called Coomber a legend who inspired them to show the video to other teachers in hopes that they would also do it and utilize the game for online learning.

“I sent this to a friend who's a middle-school math teacher. Maybe he can buy a VR set and a copy of Half-Life: Alyx and bill it to his school district as a teaching aid, what do you think?” another commenter wrote.

“As an undergraduate Mathematics student and as a "gamer" this is blowing my mind, it almost moved me to tears, thank you,” another one wrote.

Half-Life: Alyx was released last Monday, March 23 and received rave reviews from the gaming community. While Valve recently said they expect someone to modify the game to be playable without using a VR headset, Coomber’s video just showed there are tons of benefits playing the game as it is.
