It took Real Madrid 23 minutes to get on the scoreboard, but after that it was clear sailing as Los Galacticos thumped Espanyol at Santiago Bernabeu on Sunday, 5-0.

Cristiano Ronaldo got the scoring started in the first half off an assist by Gonzalo Higuain, and then Sami Khedira followed it up with a 38th minute strike.

Espanyol was two goals down heading into halftime, but surrendered three more in the second half as Higuain scored twice (47th and 78th minute), and Kaka (66th minute) added another to leave no doubt which club was the dominant side. Kaka also added an assist in the match.

Real Madrid ended up taking 22 shots in the match, with 12 on goal. Espanyol recorded six shots with just one on target, but controlled the ball for 48 percent of the match.

Real Madrid are back to being 10 points ahead of second-place Barcelona in La Liga with the victory, while Espanyol are in 11th place.

With the match basically decided, manager Jose Mourinho decided to substitute 19-year-old forward Morata in the 81st minute of the match.
