A new video shows what would happen to Earth if its rotation suddenly changes direction. Although the phenomenon would eventually make the planet greener, Earth would first go through extreme and catastrophic changes before this happens.

Ever since Earth was formed, it has rotated from west to east on its axis. However, if for some reason Earth’s rotation suddenly changes, it would be transformed into a totally different planet.

This bizarre scenario was recently explored by the YouTube Channel What If. According to a video released by the channel, a change in the direction of Earth’s rotation would first affect winds and ocean currents, which would directly lead to a drastic shift in the planet’s climate.

These effects would cause powerful winds and massive waves to sweep across the planet, causing high levels of destruction all over the globe. The video noted that the unusual weather conditions would trigger various environmental effects that can wipe out almost all life on the surface of the planet.

Eventually, following the turmoil caused by a change in the Earth’s axis, the landscapes of various continents would begin to shift as a new ocean current distributes heat around the globe in a different direction.

In other words, the massive environmental change would turn jungles into deserts and barren lands into areas filled with vegetation.

“This new current would make the deserts retreat from Africa and Eurasia. You’d have to go to the other side of the planet to do some quad biking on the golden landscape,” the video stated. “More specifically, to Brazil.”

“The humid expanse of the Amazon would end up as arid sand dunes,” it added. “The U.S. would also get very arid in the south. But none of the new barrens would be anywhere close to how dry the Sahara desert is now.”

Based on the video, Earth would have more green areas in its new state compared to before when it was spinning regularly. Eventually, through evolution and with more hospitable surroundings, complex living organisms would begin to emerge, allowing life to start all over again.
