If there is one person who knows what it takes to win a championship belt, it would have to be former UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov.

“The Eagle” gave his frank assessment on Jose Aldo, who is coming off a unanimous decision win over Pedro Munhoz at UFC 265.

The 34-year-old put on a defensive and counter-striking clinic, earning him a trio of 30-27 scores on the judges' sheet.

For Nurmagomedov, one fight cannot determine what level a fighter is at. He pointed out Aldo’s previous fight against Petr Yan at UFC 251 last year, a clash for the vacant UFC bantamweight title. The Brazilian lost that fight via TKO in the fifth round.

Aldo managed to bounce back from that loss with two consecutive wins. Before his win over Munhoz, the Brazilian also won by unanimous decision over Marlon Vera.

But as far as Nurmagomedov is concerned, Aldo needs to do more if he is serious about making another title run.

“He got beat up when he fought Petr, right? A guy wins one fight and everyone starts talking,” Nurmagomedov stated to RT Sport.

“Let him fight Petr the same way. Then we can say he’s peaking again. You saw what he did. He closed up and waited for the ref to stop the fight. That shows that you’re not at your peak. If you’re getting hit and you’re conscious and you’re not defending yourself, I call those fighters businessmen. They come out to make money,” he continued.

Nurmagomedov believes that world title opportunities should be given based on the "competitive spirit" of the fighter.

“There are real champions that go hard on everyone,” Nurmagomedov stated. “They don’t care [about] the money. Of course, it’s (money) an important aspect, but he [needs to have] the competitive spirit. So there’s no way Aldo is having a second peak. You can try to prove it all you want, but I’ve been through this.”
