A stranded vehicle is shown in new video footage being struck Sunday by a freight train in Congers, New York. The vehicle's sole occupant avoided injury from the incident as she managed to escape her car after it got stuck on the train tracks. The video had garnered more than 6,200 views, 40 shares and 90 likes since it was posted on Facebook Monday.

The Clarkstown Police Department (CPD) obtained footage of the incident, which was then posted on Facebook. The video showed a southbound CSX train ramming into a 2014 Hyundai Elantra that was stuck on railway tracks. The train's driver repeatedly hit its horn as it continued to inch closer to the now-destroyed vehicle, which was ultimately moved to the side of the tracks by the CSX train. A thud-like sound could be heard as the Hyundai Elantra was struck.

The man who filmed the incident can be heard in the background, saying: "Oh, this does not look good. This car is about to get crushed."

"A southbound train struck the car as you can see in the video," the CPD wrote in the video's caption on Facebook. "Thankfully the sole occupant of the car was able to get away from the car before the train hit it. The crossing was closed for an hour as a tow truck removed the car and a safety inspection was done on the tracks."

The name of the 43-year-old woman involved was being withheld due to a pending investigation into the incident, according to Lohud.

Facebook comments suggested that the woman mistakenly believed the tracks to be an entrance to a restaurant. Several others also claimed that incidents of this caliber have occurred on these tracks before and even recommended ways to fix the issue.

"She thought it was the road going to the restaurant & her wheels got stuck on the tracks," one person commented on Facebook. "She wasn't from the area and it has happened before. So clearly they need to fix this."

"I was there when they got stuck... should be better lighting by tracks so this doesn't continue to happen," a second user commented.

"Being this has happened a couple times why not put a gate that is down when there is no train to keep cars out and goes up when [the] train is coming it will help people see that it is not a street," a third Facebook user wrote.

It isn't uncommon for cars to become stuck on train tracks, but such collisions have decreased significantly from 20 years ago, according to WGN-TV. Improved awareness and safety measures that have been established, such as gates and lights, have been attributed as the reasoning for reduced railroad accidents.
