KEY POINTS

  • Knicks All-Star Julius Randle had to be held back from confronting referee Scott Foster after Monday's loss to the Nets
  • Randle was called for a travel as he was attempting a potential game-tying jumper with 5.7 seconds left in the game
  • The Nets went on to win over the Knicks, 117-112

New York Knicks All-Star forward Julius Randle was furious at the end of their 117-112 loss to the Nets on Monday at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

The Battle in The Big Apple started out like another easy win in favor of Brooklyn’s offensive juggernaut led by James Harden and Kyrie Irving.

In the third quarter, the Nets were up by as much as 18 points and began to coast.

However, the Nets’ late-game defensive problems surfaced once again, and the gutsy Knicks battled back to make it a single-possession game with just 5.7 seconds remaining.

Down 112-115, the Knicks had the possession and a golden opportunity to tie the game and force overtime.

To nobody’s surprise, the inbounds pass found its way to Randle, who raised up for a three but ended up fumbling the ball and getting called for a costly traveling violation.

Randle was upset with the call as he believed that his defender on the play, Irving, had knocked the ball loose and that no violation should have been whistled.

The first-time All-Star’s frustration appears to be justified as the replay showed that Irving did make contact with the ball.

The Nets held on to take the win, and Randle was still very upset even after the final buzzer. His teammates Obi Toppin and Taj Gibson, as well as head coach Tom Thibodeau, needed to hold him back from confronting referee Scott Foster.

Randle put on a spectacular performance despite the losing effort as he hauled 33 points, grabbed 12 rebounds, and dished out six assists. The Knicks sit at seventh in the Eastern Conference with a 20-20 record.

The Nets, meanwhile, continue their impressive run, winning their fifth straight and 12 of their last 13 outings.

Irving had 34 markers, while James Harden notched his tenth triple-double as a Net with 21 points to go along with 15 rebounds and 15 assists. They sit at second in the East with a 27-13 standing.
