KEY POINTS

  • Greenwood equals the record set by Rooney, Kidd and Best
  • He has scored 17 goals this Premier League season
  • Man Utd face Leicester City in their final league fixture of 2019-20

Manchester United’s teenage sensation Mason Greenwood has equaled a record set by club legends Wayne Rooney, George Best and Brian Kidd.

Greenwood, who started Man Utd’s Premier League fixture against West Ham on Wednesday, July 22, scored the equalizer and helped Man Utd draw the game 1-1 and remain alive in the race to finish in the top four, which would allow them to play Champions League football for the next season.

Even though the hosts dominated in the match initially, David Moyes’ men fought back and Michail Antonio opened the scoring by converting a penalty into a goal after Paul Pogba was penalized for handball. Just four minutes into the second half, Greenwood shot one into the back of the net with a clinical left-footed finish.

That goal meant Greenwood emulated Man Utd icons such as Rooney, Best and Kidd by becoming just the fourth teenager in the Red Devils’ history to score 17 goals in a single season for the club.

The result saw Man Utd climb to No. 3 in the Premier League table and even though they are equal in points with Chelsea (63 points), the Blues are placed fourth in the table because of a lower goal difference. Leicester City, with 62 points, are in fifth place and they next take on Man Utd in a winner-take-all fixture.

It is Chelsea that are going to play first as they take on Wolves on Saturday at home. The fate of Frank Lampard’s side will still depend on the result of Man Utd and Leicester’s match that will take place at the King Power Stadium.

If Man Utd win the match, that would seal the last two Champions League spots for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men and Chelsea. If Leicester win, then Chelsea will finish outside the top four because of their lower goal difference in comparison to Man Utd. A draw in the game also will end Chelsea’s hopes to finish in the top four, again due to their lower goal difference.

Man Utd will fail to finish in the top four if they end up losing to Leicester and Chelsea defeat Wolves. But, Man Utd can attempt to sign Dortmund’s Jadon Sancho, their top transfer target this summer, only if they secure Champions League football for next campaign and hence, Solksjaer and Co. will go all-out against Leicester to win the match.
