  • Mike Tyson learned his unique KO strategy from Kevin Rooney
  • Rooney intended to teach Tyson the said technique to escape from the ropes
  • A veteran boxing coach demonstrated how to throw an overhand punch like Tyson

A video has revealed how Mike Tyson learned a unique strategy that brutally KO’d his opponents inside the ring.

In the history of boxing, only few will argue that Tyson was the most brutal heavyweight boxer of all time. At a very young age, trainers already knew that Tyson possesses vicious KO power in his fists. His late mentor Cus D’Amato nurtured his talent and turned him to a fearsome entity inside the ring. However, it was his former trainer Kevin Rooney who taught him a technique that would help him become one of the best KO artists of all time.

The drills he learned from Rooney really paid off and even led to brutal knockouts. YouTube channel The Modern Martial Artist uploaded a short video clip explaining how Tyson learned Rooney’s unique strategy.

The video shows Rooney teaching Tyson how to hop fast to quickly change angles and set up a new line of attack. The duo can be seen perfecting each move. Tyson learned quickly and was able to apply the technique in actual boxing matches. He became a multi-stance fighter and was able to perform the said technique in different directions during fights.

Rooney intended to teach this to Tyson in order to escape whenever an opponent corners him by the ropes. But little did they know that when it is combined with Tyson’s natural-born skills and tremendous KO power, the technique will work out perfectly even during hard exchanges.

Evident in most of his fights, Tyson was able to land his signature uppercut and body shot by using the same strategy. The video also shows how effective Rooney’s technique during some of Tyson’s most notable fights. In fact, the legendary boxer indeed sent his opponents crashing to the ground by performing it as it creates enough space for Tyson to throw his lethal punches despite being caught up by the ropes.

Last month, veteran boxing coach Brandon Krause demonstrated how to throw an overhand punch like Tyson in one his recent tutorials.

According to Krause, the overhand punch itself may look like the power depends on how hard a boxer swings his arm. But in reality, throwing the body downwards followed by the overhand swing is what makes the punch powerful.

“The arc really comes because you throw your body down which basically makes the arc of your fist look a lot more,” Krause explained.

“So what’s happening is, I’m throwing my upper body ahead of my fist. My fist actually trail behind me,” Krause said after demonstrating the punch.

Mike Tyson
Outside of the big four, former boxing great Mike Tyson was pulled over for a DUI in 2006 in Scottsdale, Ariz. Apparently that is the spot to get pulled over if you’re a famous former athlete. Reuters
