A shocking video has recently surfaced that shows an inmate brutally attacking the prison guards in a bid to escape. The inmate, Damian Herrera, has been accused of killing five people in a shooting spree at Rio Arriba County Jail in Tierra Amarilla, New Mexico.

In a video released by the jail authorities, the inmate was caught on surveillance cameras, shutting a guard in a prison cell and attacking another with a flashlight. Rio Arriba County Sheriff James Lujan said Herrera, facing trial for killing three of his family members and two others, would be facing fresh criminal charges.

"He [Herrera] told one of the guards who were on duty that his toilet wasn't working. So the guard went ahead and opened the door to check the toilet. When he went in to check the toilet, Mr. Herrera locked him into the cell," Lujan said.

The video dated June 15, which was released by the prison officials a week ago, shows Herrera walking shirtless in the jail’s booking area, and one of the guards walking into the nearby jail cell. Herrera then escapes from his cell and locks the door, trapping the guard. Another camera shows him going to the guard station and grabbing a flashlight from under the table. He then hides behind a wall near a wall corner and attacks the police officer who turns at the corner.

A copy of the video was posted on a YouTube channel.

“As the guard passed the corner of the wall, he struck him with a flashlight, and then a fight ensued. So they had a wrestling match going on in the booking area,” Lujan was quoted as saying in multiple reports.

The guard could be seen in the video making a desperate attempt to restrain Herrera. He even used a Taser but to no avail. More guards then rushed to the scene and helped tackle Herrera to the ground. After he was handcuffed, he was taken to a cell away from the general population, near the booking area, Lujan said.

Herrera is awaiting trial after being held for shooting and killing his stepfather Max Trujillo Sr., younger brother Brendon Herrera, and mother Maria Rosita Gallegos at their home in La Madera. The truck that Hererra used to escape was stolen from two others who were also killed by him in Taos County. He was caught after a high-speed chase by the Rio Arriba County Police.

This was Herrera’s second attempt at escaping from jail, according to the Santa Fe New Mexican. In the first one, he escaped from his cell and went as far as the kitchen before he was caught and restrained again. However, he did not assault anyone, reports said.

Lujan said Herrera would face criminal charges after his latest attempt of escaping from the prison, but it wasn’t specified what those charges would be. “I think it would be better for all of our detention facility personnel for the public up in Tierra Amarilla, and the county of Rio Arriba if we went ahead and had him transferred out,” he added. He also said Herrera could be moved to another prison facility in Santa Fey very soon.
