Obama is holding this press conference in an effort to regain public trust after former NSA contractor Edward Snowden revealed the federal government has been spying on the public, both in the U.S. and abroad. Following the revelation, Snowden was granted asylum in Russia.

Earlier Friday, German Internet service providers Deutsche Telekom AG (OTCMKTS:DTEGY) and United Internet AG (ETR:UTDI) announced they will both be encrypting customer emails in an effort to combat the NSA’s spying efforts.

It remains to be seen whether Obama can regain public trust after the NSA leaks shocked the world, although it's worth noting that some of the NSA programs began under his predecessor, President George W. Bush.
