Prince Charles and Prince Andrew were once married to Princess Diana and Sarah Ferguson, respectively. Prince Edward is still married to his wife, Sophie, Countess of Wessex.

Before Prince William and Prince Harry wed Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle, it was the three royal siblings’ wives who usually made headlines. On the online forum site Quora, royal fans discussed whether or not the three female royals were also pitted against each other like what has been happening to Middleton and Markle.

Margaret Shannon, a self-proclaimed empress of libraries, said that there was also conflict and tension between the royal couples, particularly Prince Charles and Princess Diana and Prince Andrew and Ferguson. Prince Edward and Sophie were not involved in the issues because they only tied the knot in 1999.

Prince Charles and Princess Diana and Prince Andrew and Ferguson separated in 1992, and their divorces were finalized in 1996.

Shannon has placed the blame on the press for pitting the royal couples against each other. She said this is usually done to make sure that the publication would profit from their stories.

“Diana had to be the good sister because she was expected to be Queen someday. Tall, blonde, classic English complexion, she fitted the part… The narrative of her life fit as well – after wandering the earth glass slipper in hand, Charles found his princess in quite literally the girl next door,” she wrote.

Jade Worthington, a social worker by profession, said that the media has reached an all-time low even after they promised to clean up their act after Princess Diana’s death.

But Sallie Smythe, an avid reader of royal biographies, thinks that the royal wives were never pitted against each other. She said that Prince Charles was never close to his siblings but there was no drama between them like what Middleton and Markle are experiencing.

Sue McCune Martin also said that Princess Diana and Ferguson were not pitted against each other in the beginning because they were actually friends.
