Ahead of the "What Happened, Brittany Murphy?" documentary release, director Cynthia Hill opened up about the late actress' husband, Simon Monjack, referring to him as a "disturbed individual" in an interview with People.

"He was a disturbed individual who was used to conning people and Brittany was one of his last victims," Hill told the outlet. "There was a pattern of behavior that became very obvious the more research that we did."

Murphy died at the age of 32 in December 2009 due to untreated pneumonia and multiple drug intoxication. Five months after the actress' death, her husband passed away at the age of 40.

The documentary will explore the actress' mysterious death and unveil additional details about her final days.

Makeup artist Trista Jordan, who worked with Murphy on her last movie "Something Wicked," is one of the individuals appearing in the documentary. According to her, the actress was in pain.

"Her eyes were so sunken, and she just seemed so sad," Jordan recalled. "She wasn't herself. She was in so much pain. She had Bambi legs and couldn't stand up."

The documentary will also tackle Monjack's dark past. It will feature his mother Linda, brother James and former fiancée Elizabeth Ragsdale.

Ragsdale recalled she was four months pregnant and Monjack wanted her to give birth in America. He promised to meet her in New York and paid for her flight ticket.

"When I got to my little studio in New York, I called him and he answered. I said, 'Simon, I've made it to ...' and before I could get that sentence out, he hung up on me. He left me pregnant and abandoned," Ragsdale said.

The documentary's executive producer, Buddy Day, also noted that "[Murphy] her death was so bizarre and there are so many twists and turns."

Meanwhile, Hill, who talked to many of Murphy's friends and relatives, said the actress was a generous person who was loved by everyone.

"Everyone was so consistent when they would describe her. She was so generous, caring, and always thinking about everybody else and I think sometimes that gets forgotten because of all the mystery surrounding her death," she said. "She was loved by everyone."

"What Happened, Brittany Murphy?" is slated for release on HBO Max on Oct. 14.
