Former professional basketball star Lamar Odom checked into rehab last week over the fear he might start doing drugs again as his dead son's birthday approached, TMZ reported late Tuesday. Odom willingly sought treatment just over a year after he was admitted for a drug overdose.

According to TMZ Sports, Odom's son, Jayden, was born Dec. 15, 2005, but died the following June from sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Sources told TMZ his son's death was the primary reason Odom started doing drugs.

The rehabilitation program for which Odom checked himself in last week is for drugs even though he is "clean," People reported Monday. Sources told the publication Odom was doing well since he entered rehab.

“He drove himself, it was his idea,” the source reportedly said about Odom getting help. “He’s going to be gone during the holidays, which is when people have relapses and problems.”

"[Lamar]’s being very adult and mature and just wants to be a great father and brother, a better friend," the source added. “The goal is for him to be inside during Christmas and New Years. Crazy things happen during those times. There’s been amazing reports from the doctors thus far. He’s doing extraordinary well, he’s in great spirits,."

The news of Odom's most recent stint in rehab came days before he and Khloé Kardashian were scheduled to officially get divorced.

Kardashian filed for divorce the first time Dec. 13, 2013, and signed the paperwork in July 2015. However, the divorce was called off when Odom was found unconscious in a Nevada brothel in October 2015. Once he recovered and got out of the hospital, Odom was reportedly spotted drinking at clubs on several occasions.
