A new wave of U.S. women gymnasts are expected to gain attention soon, as the 2022 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships get underway on Saturday in Liverpool, England.

Among the crop of stars is Shilese Jones, a Seattle native who is coming off a huge performance at the U.S. National Gymnastics Championships in August.

While Konnor McClain won the all-around with 112.75 score, Jones wasn't far behind at a 112.0 score to finish second. It was on the floor exercise where Jones shined, finishing first with a score of 28.35. She also tied for first on the uneven bars.

Then came the World Championship Selection Camp on Friday in Katy, Texas, where Jones truly made a name for herself. She grabbed the lead after the first rotation and did not falter, finishing first in the all-around (56.700) to earn an automatic spot on the U.S. team.

It was quite a performance for someone who wasn't even sure if she'd ever compete.

Jones considered quitting the sport last summer after losing her father, Sylvester Jones Jr., to a long battle with kidney disease. She has been public about her closeness to her father, who motivated to her to stay in gymnastics.

"This is honestly what he wanted for me," Jones said. "He definitely was a role model for me. He pushed me every single day."

Jones describes the sixth months after her father's death as "the hardest months" of her life. On Instagram, she shared a picture of a tattoo on her shoulder in her father's memory. It reads: "Dad. Your name echoes in my heartbeat."

After winning the all-around competition at the selection camp, Jones said that qualifying for the World Championships had fulfilled a dream. She joins a stellar U.S. group that is looking for their sixth consecutive title.

"This has been my biggest dream for a long time now and my biggest goal since I came back," she said.

Liverpool awaits this weekend for Jones, who is quickly climbing the ranks of top gymnasts in the world.

The 2024 Olympics in Paris may be next.
