The pros who will be competing with a new batch of celebrities on the upcoming 27th season of “Dancing with the Stars” has been announced, and two powerhouse names from the ABC series are conspicuously absent from it. However, there may have been a previous warning to fans of Maksim Chmerkovskiy and Peta Murgatroyd that the couple wasn’t going to be a part of the show any longer.

ABC announced the pros competing on Season 27 on Tuesday, revealing that Lindsay Arnold, Alan Bersten, Sharna Burgess, Cheryl Burke, Witney Carson, Artem Chigvintsev, Val Chmerkovskiy, Sasha Farber, current reigning champ Jenna Johnson, Keo Motsepe, Gleb Savchenko and Emma Slater are all returning. In addition, troupe member Brandon Armstrong has officially been promoted and will be competing as a pro for the first time.

“This is the face we made when we found out we were going to be pros this season together!” Armstrong captioned a shot of himself and Bersten on Instagram. “Y’all I’m beyond and excited to be joining these amazing line up of pros and compete for a mirror ball.”

However, astute fans of the show quickly noticed that Maks and Peta, who last competed on the show’s 25th season, were absent from the list and not competing. While their lack of participation during Season 26’s All-Athletes edition was attributable to their dance show tour with Val at the time, fans are left wondering why the duo are sitting this season out as well.

The pair has not yet released any official statements, but they had made previous comments which could reveal that their decision not to compete was actually made a while ago.

In an interview with ET earlier this month, Peta revealed that she would like to become pregnant with her second child soon, admitting that she and Maks would hopefully get pregnant within half a year.

“Maybe in the next six months,” she said. “I think that would be a healthy, good time for us.”

Meanwhile, in an interview with Mass Live back in April, Maks seemed reluctant to rejoin the show as a pro at any point in the future, seemingly hinting that he was done with the show unless he was to become a judge.

“Listen, I love the show, but I have other interests at the moment,” he said at the time. I would have loved to judge and transition into that, but it’s not my call. It’s not up to me. Everything that is up to me, I do at 100 percent and then give it my all. I just don’t think I can do the show as a professional dancer at 100 percent and give it my all anymore. I am at a different point in my life.”

It’s also notable that Maks’ last turn on the floor wasn’t without some drama. He competed on Season 25 with Vanessa Lachey but didn’t compete with her during the show’s third week, after the two reportedly ran into some disagreements during their rehearsals. They later mended fences, before being eliminated during Week 7 of the competition. Following their ouster, he took to social media to praise his partner, before also hinting he might have competed on the show for the last time.

“Dancing with the Stars” Season 27 premieres Monday, Sept. 24 at 8 p.m. EDT on ABC.
