Meghan Markle's wedding dress may have left a bigger impression on the public despite how iconic Kate Middleton's wedding gown had become.

Clare Waight Keller, the Givenchy designer behind the Duchess of Sussex's gorgeous wedding dress, recently opened up about the attention Prince Harry's wife's gown received. During the TIME 100 gala, where she was hailed one of the most influential people of the year, Keller said that the impact was heightened due to social media, particularly Instagram.

"I had no idea how momentous it was going to be," she said of Markle and Prince Harry's 2018 royal wedding, TIME reported. "The last time there was a royal wedding there was no Instagram, really, or any of those huge social networks. So it really took me aback, actually."

The Givenchy designer also touched on how she came up with the design for Markle's wedding dress, revealing that a simple and elegant gown had been perfect for the actress-turned-duchess.

"The idea of that purity was just really modern," Clare said. "I think it was right for now, and it was right for her."

According to Daily Mail, her lavish wedding wardrobe may have cost Markle about $446,000 in total.

Markle made sure to show her appreciation for Keller when she made a special appearance at the British Fashion Awards in December last year. During the ceremony, she honored Keller and presented her with the Womenswear Designer of the Year award.

"I feel especially proud to announce tonight’s winner who, yes, is a British designer leading on the global stage with vision and creativity but also with incredible kindness, which is why when I met her for the first time 11 months ago, I knew that we'd be working very closely together. The winner this evening is Clare Waight Keller," Markle said.

Meanwhile, although Keller believes it didn't have the impact Markle's dress had, Middleton's wedding gown still remains an iconic piece in fashion history. The Alexander McQueen creation was made in collaboration with designer Sarah Burton. According to the royal expert Katie Nicholl, the gorgeous dress cost the Duchess of Cambridge's parents an estimated $268,000, Entertainment Tonight reported.

The lace of her gown had been crafted at the Royal School of Needlework by a team whose youngest member had been 19 years old at the time. Her veil was created at the same institution, featuring hand-embroidered flowers in the design.

Middleton paired the gown with Robinson Pelham earrings, which were a gift from her parents, and a Cartier halo tiara that was a loan from Queen Elizabeth II.

Inspiring many copycats over the years, Middleton's stunning lace wedding dress remains one of the most talked about gowns in recent years.
