Kate Middleton may or may not be called Princess of Wales.

The Duchess of Cambridge has several titles at the present. Just like Meghan Markle, she holds the HRH title and both are considered the Princess of the United Kingdom.

This occupation is listed on baby Archie’s birth certificate. The same occupation is also printed for Middleton on Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis’ birth certificates even if she’s called “duchess.”

According to Jess Sheldon, a journalist for Express, it’s still not sure if Middleton would ever be called “princess.” Princess Diana was called as such because she was the “Princess of Wales.”

At the moment, Prince Charles’ second wife is entitled to be addressed in the same manner. However, Camilla reportedly preferred to be addressed as duchess instead of princess as the said title is still strongly associated with Princess Diana. Middleton may decide to do the same.

“It’s therefore not clear as to whether Kate would choose to become known as Princess of Wales, as this may cause confusion between herself and her late mother-in-law,” Sheldon wrote.

Whether Middleton be called princess or not, she will become the Princess of Wales someday. However, the honor will not be automatically given to her when Prince Charles becomes the new king.

When the current Prince of Wales takes over the throne, his title will be passed down to Prince William. However, before the Duke of Cambridge becomes the new Prince of Wales, Prince Charles should grant it to the heir as a “personal honor.” When Prince William officially becomes the new Prince of Wales, only then will Middleton become the Princess of Wales. It’s the only way for Middleton to inherit Princess Diana’s title.

In related news, netizens discussed if Middleton deserved the recent honor she received from Queen Elizabeth II. On the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s eighth wedding anniversary, the monarch appointed Middleton the Dame Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order.

The netizens believed that it was the Queen’s way to recognize Middleton’s works for the monarchy. Also, online users defended the Queen saying that the honor is a “personal gift and she does not have to justify giving this award to anyone.”
