Kate Middleton has only one way to inherit Princess Diana’s title.

Middleton became the Duchess of Cambridge when she married Prince William in 2011. However, aside from this, she can also inherit her late mother-in-law’s “Princess of Wales” title when a particular event happens.

According to Martina Bet, a journalist for Express, the Duchess of Cambridge is married to the future heir apparent. Her title is due for an upgrade when Prince Charles becomes the new king of England. When this happens, Prince William will be the new Prince of Wales and the “Princess of Wales” title will be passed to Middleton.

However, the titles will not be automatically passed down to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. Once Prince Charles becomes the new monarch he still has to grant the title to Prince William as a “personal honor.” When Prince William becomes the new Prince of Wales, only then will Middleton become the Princess of Wales.

Queen Elizabeth II granted Prince Charles the title as the “personal honor” in 1958 when he was just 9 years old. However, the Queen waited until he turned 20 to crown Prince Charles as the Prince of Wales.

As of late, Prince Charles’ second wife Camilla Parker Bowles is technically the Princess of Wales because she’s married to the Prince of Wales. A woman married to the British royalty gets the female version of her husband’s title.

However, Camilla opted to be addressed as the Duchess of Cornwall because the said title is still strongly associated with Princess Diana. Many believed that Camilla decided to do this to avoid stirring the Brits who don’t like her.

However, Camilla snatched Princess Diana’s title when she and Prince Charles visited Ghana. The Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall were welcomed with a big tarpaulin that read “The Centre For National Culture Kumasi Welcomes Your Royal Highnesses Prince Charles Prince of Wales, Princess Camilla Duchess of Cornwall.”

Royal experts believe that Camilla will become queen when Prince Charles takes over the throne. According to Dickie Arbiter, the Duchess of Cornwall’s fate as queen consort is certain because “there is no other title for the wife of the king.”
