KEY POINTS

  • Users were prompted to revert to Windows 10 to avoid bugs and issues
  • Only users with older PCs received the alert
  • Windows 11 users received the notice after running their devices after a clean install

Windows 11 users running on the Insider tester version using older PCs received a notice that prompted them to revert back to Windows 10.

Windows 11 Insider testers this week received notifications that their devices are not eligible and that they should install Windows 10 to continue in the Windows Insider Program. Users received the alerts upon trying to enroll in the Insider Program after running a clean install on their older devices.

"Your device is not eligible to join the Windows Insider Program on Windows 11. Please install Windows 10 to participate in the Windows Insider Program in the Release Preview Channel," the notification reads, according to MSPowerUser.

Reports suggest that only users running Windows 11 preview on older PCs received the notice to revert. A user running the OS on his a Dell Latitude 3379 with a Core i3-6100U and a Dell XPS 13 9333 with a Core i5-4210U said claims that his Windows 11 PCs continue to download and install new updates on the Dev and Beta channels, ARSTechnica reported.

Meanwhile, a Windows Insider tester running Windows 11 in an ineligible PC told ZDNet that after receiving the notification, he tried to do as instructed. However, there was no longer any link to sign in for the Insider Program.

Microsoft officials earlier said that to ensure the Windows 11 reliability and security concern, the company will not include several older PCs from the list of devices eligible for the new operating system upgrade.

Users with devices not included in the list may choose to do a manual upgrade on older PCs. They may create a Windows 11 installation media through the Media Creation Tool.

However, manual upgrade on ineligible devices means running the PC in an unsupported state. This means Windows Update will not provide the device with security and driver updates in these devices.

As Microsoft approaches the Windows 11 official public launch on Oct. 5, the software giant reminded users currently running the Windows 11 previews in Dev and Beta versions to move out as the channel will soon stop testing the OS. The company said it will continue to provide support for Windows 10 until 2025.
