KEY POINTS

  • Snowsqualls are possible in Pennsylvania on Tuesday
  • Temperatures are expected to drop below zero in Kansas and Kentucky
  • Frost and freeze conditions are expected to last through early this week

Freeze warnings have been issued in 13 states as a cold surge is expected in the western and eastern parts of the United States. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Pittsburgh has also warned of potential snowsqualls Tuesday.

Freeze warnings have been issued in the "central High Plains eastward through the mid-Mississippi, Tennessee and Ohio Valleys toward the Appalachians in anticipation of this early season cold surge," the Weather Prediction Center (WPC) warned Sunday.

The NWS also said the frost and freeze conditions are projected to last through early this week.

While no freeze warnings have been issued in Pennsylvania, snowsqualls are expected mainly along the north of Interstate 80 (I-80) in Pittsburgh on Tuesday.

Snowsqualls are "quick intense bursts of snow" that are "accompanied by strong gusty winds." While these events typically last for only less than 3 hours, they can result in "treacherous travel conditions" due to reduced visibility.

A freeze warning is issued "when significant, widespread freezing temperatures are expected," the NWS stated on its website.

Temperatures are expected to fall below zero in some parts of Kansas early Tuesday, the NWS in Wichita noted. For instance, in Topeka, temperatures are expected to fall at 25 degrees Fahrenheit (-3.8 degrees Celsius).

Temperatures in Paducah, Kentucky, may also plummet "to record or near-record levels" in the evenings of Monday and Tuesday.
