A woman in Arkansas has been arrested after she was found living with her mother's mummified body while continuing to collect the latter's disability checks after her death, police said.

The police arrested 54-year-old Geanee Pike after she was found living with the dead body of her 73-year-old mother, Gloria Pike, in her house in Lincoln. While executing a search at the house, the police saw the body wrapped in newspapers on a bed next to Gaenee's bedroom. The house was in "deplorable living conditions" and had no running water, authorities said. They reportedly found human feces, urine collected in buckets and jugs throughout the house, 5 News reported.

The investigation began in July 2021 after Gloria's brother who lives next door reported her missing. He complained that Gloria had stage four breast cancer and was not seen since August 2020.

After several failed attempts to contact Gloria, officers spoke to Geanee who claimed that her mother was not missing but staying with an unknown friend at an unknown location. However, Geanee refused to let the police search her house. She also denied having any access to Gloria's bank account or check card, Arkansas Online reported.

The investigators made the shocking discovery while executing the search warrant obtained for investigating the financial identity fraud. After the body was found, Geanee reportedly admitted that her mom had died of natural causes sometime at the end of 2020. She also told the police that she did not report it but just covered her body with a blanket.

Investigators found Geanee continued to use the social security disability money deposited into Gloria's account every month after her death. However, Geanee told the police that her mother owed her money and had promised to repay it when she would receive the disability checks.

The police have charged Geanee on multiple counts, including financial identity fraud and abuse of a corpse. Gloria's body was sent for medical examination to determine the cause of death.
