World Oceans Day falls every year on June 8 to raise awareness and educate people on the importance of one of Earth’s most vital resources.

The United Nations has called the oceans the “heart of the planet,” as it makes up nearly two-thirds of earth’s surface.

World Ocean Day was first suggested in 1992 during the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro. This year, the theme of World Ocean Day is "The Ocean: Life and Livelihoods." Due to the pandemic, all the celebrations conducted by the UN will happen virtually.
