KEY POINTS

  • Big E won his first major WWE singles title on Christmas
  • His rematch with Sami Zayn is likely next
  • Big E may collide with WWE Universal champion Roman Reigns

Ettore Ewen, better known in the WWE world as Big E, knows what it takes to succeed in the promotion. He has been part of multiple WWE tag team title runs with the New Day, but most know he can be a force to reckon with in singles competition.

Rumors of the 34-year-old embarking on a singles run have been in the air for quite some time. Big E formally did that in the Christmas edition of WWE SmackDown, and his singles debut was successful. The Tampa, Florida native challenged Sami Zayn for the Intercontinental title and won handily over the heel wrestler.

The card was hardly surprising since there was a backstory. At WWE TLC, it was Big E who pinned Zayn in an eight-team tag match. This earned him the right to challenge the Master Strategist in a Lumberjack match on the Dec. 25 edition of WWE SmackDown.

It was a wild Christmas offering that saw both stars benefit and fall from the presence of other WWE stars lurking outside the ring. Zayn did try to escape when chaos ensued, but Apollo Crews got to him on time to prevent him from slithering away and retaining his title.

When Zayn was tossed back into the waiting arms of Big E, it was the start of the end. The “Powerhouse of Positivity” executed his familiar belly-to-belly move and devastating splash before ending it all with a “Big Ending” to win the WWE Intercontinental title.

It was Big E’s first singles title in the WWE, officially starting his journey as an individual competitor. It remains to be seen what lies ahead for the 34-year-old star, although a potential rematch with Zayn is likely to happen.

For now, the big fella will savor the moment, which could have not happened at a better time. Big E celebrated his victory with other face wrestlers and is likely to gain interest from other stars coveting the prestigious WWE Intercontinental title.

Among the names being mentioned to face Big E next are Roman Reigns and Daniel Bryan. The one with Reigns would be a champion vs. champion match, perhaps the closest most will see to the two behemoths colliding.

The one with Bryan would make sense, especially if the WWE creative team intends to give Big E an added push. But as far as a title change is concerned, there is no telling if such will happen.
