  • Drew McIntyre made is debut in 2007 with SmackDown
  • He was a former Tag Team Champion and Intercontinental Champion
  • His change of name was very urgent that his titantron is still showing his real name

Drew Galloway is waiting for his turn to walk down to the ring in Detroit, MI for his debut when Stephanie McMahon asked you to do something that would change the way people would call you outside the arena.

That’s exactly what Drew McIntyre had to go through when he had his WWE debut in Friday Night SmackDown in October 2007. In a snippet posted on the WWE website for the premiere episode of a new program “Break It Down”, McIntyre shared with the WWE Universe what transpired when he was still backstage.

McMahon, the promotion’s Chief Brand Officer, approached him and asked him about his name before deciding to have it changed. “‘Is Drew Galloway your real name?’ I said, ‘Yeah,’ and she was like, ‘Ah, how about you change that?” shared the Ayr, Scotland-born wrestler.

He revealed that they were also considering McDonald as a possible last name but just stuck with the more Scottish-sounding McIntyre. He and WWE Producer Michael Hayes went straight to Talent Relations and the ring announcer was informed to introduce him as Drew McIntyre. A few minutes later, his music started playing and he’s walking towards the ring.

Accompanied by Dave Taylor, who acted as his mentor, he was seen walking to the ring with the titantron showing his real name, Drew Galloway.

The change of his name didn’t matter as he made his successful debut after he rolled-up Brett Major, half of the Major Brothers with Brian Major, off a distraction by Taylor. Brett is now known as Zack Ryder, while Brian is now wrestling under the name Curt Hawkins.

As Drew McIntyre, the 34-year old won the Intercontinental championship, RAW Tag Team Championship with Dolph Ziggler and Cody Rhodes, and is best remembered with his on-screen feud with former SmackDown General Manager Teddy Long during his Intercontinental reign in 2009.
