KEY POINTS

  • Roman Reigns' Universal Championship reign could come to an end soon
  • Reigns and Brock Lesnar are expected to collide before or at WrestleMania 38
  • Existing storylines could be altered after the Royal Rumble event this month

Roman Reigns has entered the WWE record books as the longest-reigning Universal Champion, erasing the feat previously set by arch-rival Brock Lesnar.

"The Tribal Chief" held the aforementioned belt for 504 days. This was announced via WWE’s official Twitter account.

Reigns won the title when he defeated Bray Wyatt at WWE Payback in August 2020.

Since then, the 36-year-old star has fended off all challengers. The next one up for him is former Shield stablemate Seth Rollins.

Reigns and Rollins are set to clash at the 2022 Royal Rumble pay-per-view event with the Universal Championship on the line on January 29 in St. Louis, Missouri.

With the longest-reign record set, there is a chance that Reigns could relinquish the title soon.

The earliest possible time for that to happen would be at the Royal Rumble.

Recall that in a previous post, it was mentioned how Rollins should have emerged as the WWE Champion at the Day 1 extravaganza last January 1.

Those plans were nixed after the Fatal Four-Way match originally involving Rollins, then-reigning champion Big E, Kevin Owens and Bobby Lashley saw Lesnar being inserted into the fray.

This was because "The Beast Incarnate” found himself without an opponent after Reigns tested positive for COVID-19.

Lesnar went on to win the title and is set to defend it against Lashley at the Royal Rumble.

The trajectory of WWE regarding both titles remains unclear, but there are suggestions that Reigns and Lesnar will eventually come face-to-face again--potentially before or at WrestleMania 38.

But for now, both behemoths are on separate storylines that are subject to change. That could evolve after the Royal Rumble.
