  • Malik and Gigi are "amicably working" to find the best way to co-parent their daughter, Khai, according to the report

Zayn Malik and Gigi Hadid's relationship was not as happy and healthy as fans may have thought, a report has claimed.

The former One Direction singer, 28, and the supermodel, 26, have called it quits after nearly six years together, multiple outlets confirmed, including People and Entertainment Tonight. News of the breakup came after Malik was accused of striking Gigi's mom, Yolanda Hadid, 57, during a disagreement.

An unnamed friend of Malik suggested that the split had been a long time coming, telling People, "It was a super toxic relationship."

A family friend close to Gigi, meanwhile, claimed to the outlet that Malik "has a complicated personality," adding, "It's been hard at times for Gigi to live with him."

According to the second insider, Gigi and Malik are both "good parents" and have been co-parenting their 13-month-old daughter Khai. However, Yolanda allegedly had "some issues" with the singer and thought he could treat Gigi better. This apparently created "conflicts" between Malik and the former "Real Housewives of Beverly Hills" star, the source claimed.

On Thursday, Malik released a statement on Twitter addressing the alleged incident between himself and Yolanda, saying that he is typically a private person but chose to speak out because the situation was "'leaked' to the press." Shortly after, TMZ published a story claiming he "struck" Yolanda.

Malik was charged with four counts of harassment after an incident on Sept. 29 in which he allegedly "grabbed [Yolanda] and shoved her into a dresser, causing mental anguish and physical pain," according to court documents obtained by People. The papers indicated that the singer pleaded no contest to multiple charges of harassment against both Gigi and Yolanda.

Malik has adamantly denied "striking" Yolanda.

Malik's friend claimed to People that the pop star has insisted he never hit Yolanda and that the dispute between them started when Gigi's mom came over uninvited while the model was away for work and Malik was taking care of Khai.

But despite parting ways, an unnamed Malik source told the outlet that Gigi and the singer are "not fighting" and are instead focusing on their child.

"Zayn's an amazing dad, and Gigi has said so," the source said, adding, "They are actively and amicably working to find the best way to co-parent now. Yolanda is inserting herself into a situation that does not involve her."

Reps for Malik and Yolanda did not immediately respond when asked for comment.

Gigi recently broke her silence on the dispute between Malik and her mom, stating through her rep that she is focusing on Khai and asks for privacy.
